Solid surface products have become one of the most popular choices today for countertop and wall tile options. These man-made materials come in a wide range of colors, finishes, and built-in features which give designers a lot of ways to design. Solid surfaces are also known for their durability, easy maintenance, and capacity to be renewed.
There are different finishes, from matte to high gloss, and each has its own care and maintenance instructions. This is the only type of counter you can actually sand out light scratches to rejuvenate its appearance.

Solid surface products are made to last a long time and be easy to clean. They’re a great option for homes with a lot of activity or for people who like clean lines and things that last. They are made of acrylic resins and/or polyester plastics with mineral fillers and are sold as countertops, sinks that are built in, backsplashes, and shower and tub surrounds.
Here are some main key points about solid surface products:
- Made into sheets that are usually half an inch thick and can be formed into designs or layouts with seams that are almost impossible to see
- These products can cover large areas, but sometimes you have to sew them together
- The seams are held together with a colored glue that is less noticeable after being sanded
- You can choose from a wide range of colors with finishes that range from matte to high gloss.
- These countertops are great for the kitchen because they can stand up to daily use.
- Bacteria and mold can’t grow on it.
- Non-porous material that resists many common household stains.
One advantage to solid surface products is that light scratches and/or burns can be sanded away to rejuvenate their appearance. More difficult stains can be cleaned with an abrasive cleaner and a green Scotch-Brite pad. Be sure to refer to your manufacturer’s instructions for the correct sanding process for your counter’s finish.
Even though solid surface products are very durable, there are some things they can’t do. Do not use your new countertop as a cutting board. If you cut directly on the surface, it will leave marks.
Use hot pads or trivets when placing hot pots or pans on the countertop.
If you spill nail polish remover, oven cleaner, drain cleaner, lacquer thinner, or paint remover on these items, it will stain or change the color of the surface.
Solid surface products are a durable and versatile option for your countertops, wall tiles, shower surrounds, etc. with an extensive range of design options to choose from. While they may not be completely indestructible, following the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines can help prolong their lifespan and keep them looking new for years to come.
